Professional Consultation on Current Issues of the KOMP Research Project

A professional consultation was held at Ferenc Rákóczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian University to discuss the results of the KOMP research programme. The meeting was attended by Ildikó Orosz, President of the University, István Csernicskó, Rector, as well as Katalin Pallay, Head of the Tivadar Lehoczky Social Science Research Center, and Kornélia Hires-László, Head of the Antal Hodinka Research Center for Linguistics, representing the professional background of the research.

The consultation focused on professional issues related to the KOMP (Competence – Education – Measurement – Perspective) project. The programme was launched within the framework of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ National Programme and examines the situation of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia over a four-year period. A key objective of the project is to analyse the state and effectiveness of Hungarian-language education in Transcarpathia.

Within this framework, the Transcarpathian Hungarian Schools Competence Assessment (KMIK) is being carried out, which has so far assessed the performance of 6th and 8th grade students on two occasions. The aim of the subprogramme is to provide empirical data on the key competences of students studying in Hungarian-language schools. The research is based on the methodology of the National Assessment of Basic Competencies, allowing direct comparison with results from Hungary. Large-scale assessments enable accurate monitoring of student performance and support the professional interpretation of changes. The research contributes to the long-term preservation and development of Hungarian-language education in Transcarpathia and has already served as a basis for concrete curriculum development, including the development of Ukrainian as a state language textbooks.

A study volume presenting the results of 2024 is currently in preparation within the framework of the programme, providing a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the research findings to date. During the meeting, participants discussed the planned analytical approaches and the structure of the volume. Prof. Dr. Gabriella Pusztai is also contributing to the work, strengthening the academic foundation and comprehensive interpretation of the research.

The participants also discussed possibilities for future professional cooperation, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening collaboration between the institutions.

The meeting also addressed competence assessments conducted at the Rákóczi University. The institution has been carrying out assessments among first-year students for five years, and for the second time, the survey has also been conducted among BA graduates. The separate evaluation of these results opens new perspectives in measuring student competences and represents a new dimension in higher education competence assessment.
