Brief description: The Hungarian-language spelling and grammar-checking software package developed by MorphoLogic Ltd. (hereinafter referred to simply as the spelling checker) is known as the spelling checker used in Windows Word within the Microsoft Office suite, as well as in QuarkXPress. Its primary purpose is to identify typographical errors and incorrectly spelled words in texts. The morphological generation and analysis engine underlying the grammar-checking function can also be used to linguistically analyse computer-stored corpora containing millions of words. However, it can generate and analyse forms only on the basis of existing grammatical rules and a predefined dictionary. This means that it recognises as correct only those words that are included in its checking dictionary. The aim of the joint research conducted by the research network was to supplement the spelling checker’s core dictionary with vocabulary used by Hungarian communities outside Hungary, including common nouns and proper names, and to make the out-of-Hungary subcorpus of the previously compiled Hungarian National Corpus of the Carpathian Basin (http://corpus.nytud.hu/mnsz/keszitette_hun.html) available for analysis.
