Programme title: The Situation of Hungarian Families in Transcarpathia

Brief description: Transcarpathia has traditionally been characterised by conservative values, with family unity, faith in God, and religious practice serving as key pillars of community stability. Numerous studies have shown that these factors provide an important support network in everyday life, while the war, economic uncertainty, and migration have introduced new burdens and difficult decisions. The aim of the project is to provide a comprehensive picture of the current situation of Hungarian families in Transcarpathia, examining how they preserve and adapt these values and how the crisis has affected family life and functioning.
The analysis covers all age groups. Among young people, we examine partner-selection patterns, intentions to start a family, plans for further education and employment, and willingness to migrate, with particular attention to decisions concerning timing and risk in the context of uncertainty. Among working-age adults and parents, the focus is on livelihoods, caregiving responsibilities, the division of labour within the family, ties to religious communities, and school choice, including the language of education, identity, and access. Among older people, the focus is on loneliness, access to care and services, and family and community support. Family functioning as a system is also examined in terms of relationship quality, religious practice, and community embeddedness. The project systematically synthesises findings from previous research, compares the current situation with earlier trends, and identifies protective and risk factors.
