Programme title: The Status of the Hungarian Language in Transcarpathia

Brief description: This project provides a comprehensive and ongoing examination of the Hungarian language in Transcarpathia. It maps all major domains of language use—including education, public life and public administration, the media and digital platforms, religious and cultural life, the economy and labour market, as well as the family and informal settings—and synthesises all relevant findings from different research projects within a unified framework. Our aim is to provide an up-to-date and comparable picture of the region’s linguistic ecosystem: how multilingualism functions in everyday life, how language rights are implemented, what effects mobility, the war and the digital transformation have had, and where opportunities for community- and institution-level intervention can be identified.
The Antal Hodinka Research Centre for Linguistics has been a key partner from the outset. Since its establishment, the Centre has implemented and coordinated numerous independent and collaborative projects which, in addition to linguistic research, have also been connected to broader social research. The findings of previous and ongoing studies are being organised into a shared knowledge base, complemented by databases created at the Centre and lexicographic work undertaken there. This synthesis makes trends, regional characteristics and generational differences visible and provides a basis for developing recommendations, communication models and terminological resources tailored to local needs, thereby strengthening the visibility and linguistic opportunities of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
