Brief description: Within the framework of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences National Programme, two complementary research projects are being implemented under the KOMP (Competence – Education – Assessment – Perspective) subprogramme. One of these is the Competence Assessment of Transcarpathian Hungarian Schools (KMIK), which provides empirical and comparable data on the key competences of students attending Hungarian-language schools in Transcarpathia. The research is conducted with the involvement of the Hungarian Educational Authority and follows the standardised methodology of the National Assessment of Basic Competences, making it possible to directly compare the results with data from Hungary. The large-scale assessment in 2024 covered 1,075 students in 38 institutions, while a further 1,052 students participated in 2025. The assessment measures mathematical and logical competences, reading comprehension in the mother tongue, as well as English and Ukrainian language competences. The results provide data-driven feedback to schools and have also contributed to the reform of Ukrainian-language education as the state language. Building on the findings, a textbook series entitled “Ukrainian Language for Hungarian-Language Schools” for grades 5–9 was developed and subsequently received state approval and funding.
The second pillar of KOMP is the “Assessment and Perspective” research project, which examines the economic restructuring of Transcarpathia during the years of war. The programme explores how mobilisation, labour shortages and the relocation of businesses from central and eastern Ukraine have transformed the region, as well as the social, economic and environmental consequences of this rapid restructuring. The research focuses on four main areas: changes in the structure and efficiency of entrepreneurship; the income and wealth situation of the population; the effects of decentralisation at the hromada level; and the effectiveness of local, Hungarian and international economic development programmes. The aim is to provide a well-founded, decision-supporting picture of the situation of the population, entrepreneurs and local governments. The project also includes practical components: a financial literacy development programme for secondary school students and professional recommendations that can be utilised by the local business community.
