The Diversity of the Hungarian Language in the Carpathian Basin: An Interactive Approach

In November 2025, as part of the commemorative programme marking the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the interactive exhibition The Hungarian Language in the Carpathian Basin was open to visitors at the Academy’s Headquarters in Budapest. Through a range of interactive tools, the exhibition presented the current situation of the Hungarian language across the Carpathian Basin, with particular emphasis on Hungarian-speaking communities living beyond the borders of Hungary and functioning in multilingual environments.

The exhibition highlighted differing interpretations of the concept of the mother tongue and explored the linguistic and cognitive effects of historical processes, including the Treaty of Trianon. The exhibition was curated by Miklós Kontra, with the project led by Tünde Morvai. Graphic design and technical development were carried out by Krisztián Tóbiás in cooperation with Seleris Project Ltd. The material also prominently features examples from Transcarpathia, along with references to the work of Transcarpathian authors.
