On 23 March 2026, we held a project meeting with staff members of the ELTE Research Centre for Linguistics to discuss the terminology work planned for this year. During the first two years of the terminology database development project we harmonised the terminology of public education and higher education across Hungary and seven neighbouring countries (Austria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine).
In the third year of the project, we are aligning terms related to history, one of the subjects of the school-leaving examination, across a total of nine languages (English, Croatian, Hungarian, German, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian). Through this work, the Termini Hungarian Language Research Network aims, on the one hand, to facilitate the translation of Hungarian-language textbooks in regions beyond Hungary’s borders and, on the other hand, to support preparation for the history school-leaving examination among graduates of non-Hungarian-medium schools who wish to pursue their studies in Hungary.
During the meeting, we clarified the 2026 term counts for Hungary, individual countries, and specific regions, the main points of the editorial guidelines related to the domain of history, as well as the process of finalising the educational terms compiled during the previous two years.
The terminology database is being developed with the support of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ National Programme “Science for the Hungarian Language”, under the subprogramme “Hungarian Terminology Strategy” (TMNP2023-1/2023).
